The images bellow are time-longitude, or Hovmoller, plots of sea surface height (SSH) anomaly from the merged research quality (Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1 + ERS, Envisat) altimeter data and AMSR-E SST for four latitudes (18S, 20S, 22S and 24S). The approximate locations of the centers of mesocale eddies (tracking procedure described in Chelton et al. 2008, in preparation) have been overlaid on the images. Cyclonic eddies are shown as (o) and anticyclonic eddies are displayed as (+). Data have been high-pass filtered. Click on the thumbnails for larger images (~50 kb)

The animations below show the SSH fields from the merged research quality (Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1 + ERS, Envisat) altimeter data. The first animation shows the raw SSH data and the second shows the high-pass filtered SSH data with eddy tracks overlaid.
